17d PATRIOT

Havnt got 13A yet myself

have you got 9A ,11A, and 24A yet? posted a few days ago but everyone must be recovering from Christmas because I have had no replies
sorry I have got 13A it is The BEES KNEES.It is 2D i havnt got.The whole of the left hand corner has been giving me grief
13a thebe(e)s(k)nees
<DIV>I have the following, which I think are correct:

<DIV>

<DIV>9a - SPONGE

<DIV>24a - IBIDEM

<DIV>

<DIV>I still need 10a, 11a, 19a, 2d, 3d, and 5d if anyone can help please.

<DIV>

<DIV>Thanks.

For 3 down I have Menin - men in (cricket) facing the bowling and I believe the Menin Gate was a famous battlefield in WW1

For 5 down I have batiste which is a kind of material and is baste (tack) holding it upside down.

I could only think of sponge for 9 ac but it hasn't helped me with 2dn, 4 dn or 11 ac I'm finding this puzzle particularly difficult. For 10 ac I have tantalus - this was a container which stopped the servants nicking the booze, so you could call it a case for prohibition

Any other help would be greatly appreciated

<DIV>I think 11a could be TINNITUS. Titus was a disiple of Saint Paul and a "local" could be "inn", which is being held by Titus, i.e. T(INN)ITUS. It's a medical condition which causes ringing in the ears, hence "ear-rings".

<DIV>

<DIV>4d looks like OVERT (unconcealed) and HERE (in this instance), hence OVER THERE, but I don't know what that has to do with "doughboys" ???

<DIV>

<DIV>Still struggling with 2d. Seems to be T_P_I_

<DIV>

<DIV>Regards,
<DIV>
<DIV>Gregory
<DIV>
<DIV>Incidentally, does anyone know why all my postings are littered with <DIV> signs yet nobody else's seems to have them? It seems to happen each time I press the return key. Is there any way of preventing this?

<DIV>

<DIV>Gregory

<DIV>

Thanks, porilo. Yes, you must be right about 4 dn. I think that doughboy is a term for an american soldier and in WW2 there were lots of references to them being over here, as opposed to over there which would be their own 'air' Seems the compiler is hot on wars and cricket!

2dn is tupaia which is a kind of tree shrew

14dn is Suetonius - never heard of him but I worked it out logically and then looked him up on Google. So now I'm finished, hurray!! Thanks for help received along the way - if I can help anyone else in the next couple of days before I post it off......
