The answer to 15 down appears to be DANAID but there are 7 squares. Is there a variant of danaid with an E on the end or does one add an S to pluralise the word?

Not certain, but I would go for danaids, as danaide seems to have a different meaning
The Oxford Shorter dictionary gives the word as DANAINE - of the family danaidae or danainae
But Danaine doesn't fit in with 25a

I have the same problem. The question is definitely a butterfly, not butterflies, which seems to rule out danaids. Also though danaine is the right length, it does not fit with 25 across. Danaide is a water wheel.

I am stuck and open to suggestions

I agree with your findings. DANAINE does seem to be the proper 7 letter definition - but the sixth letter is a D from 25 across SINE DIE.

Think it's Danaida.from the Latin
I definitely agree with Danaida from the Latin.
