Further to my previous question… my Vax carpet cleaner arrived today, thanks all. I was told I could only use Vax washing solution in the machine, anything else might make the cleaner not work properly and the guarantee would be void. Is this true, can I use any carpet washing solution in the Vax, or do they just want you to buy their own? Thanks all!!

They probably want you to buy their own, but its worth it, its very good and obvs. made to do the right job. I think its mainly to do with how much it foams etc.
Check the spec of the solution, as you can get foaming or no foaming ones

But would other cleaning solutions be OK to use? If so, which make is as good (and cheaper?)
I get a shot of my neighbours Vax and I think the solution she had was either Astonish or 1001
1001 – do they still make it?

I wonder how many ABers will remember that 1001 cleans a big, big carpet for less than half a crown (that was the last I heard of the stuff).
We have always used Rug Doctor solution in our Vax with no problems. We even sent it back for repairs when it was still under guarantee as some screws came loose inside machine. They didn't bother repairing it and sent a whole new machine.
I have used pro kleen solutions in my carpet shampooers, ( Bissell tell you the same). If you flush it through with clean water after you finish now can they tell.
The pro kleen has a lavender one, and as I use lavender fragranced products it stops clashes, it's great for spot cleaning too.
