Good evening, a tricky puzzle to keep me thinking while I await
the Spectator! I’ve got quite a few of the Down clues from which,
I assume, no extra words must be removed like for the 20 across clues.
Some help for the following would be appreciated to see if I’m on the
right track. Thanks in advance!

( Twenty across clues contain an extra word which must be removed before solving. Ten of these extra words contain a particular pattern of letters, with a different example in each. Several more examples of the pattern occur in clue answers. Solvers must introduce eight more examples (ie, different to those in extra words and answers) of the pattern into the perimeter by changing letters in some cells. All resulting new entries are real words, including a comparative form and an abbreviation. )

1a Cafe right out of pickled mushroom spread (7): MO?M???
6a Duke leaving country after one took vulgar picture (6): ?B?S??
16a Base probing sailors' careers (5) : SEAR?
19a Extremely slack Welsh alumni are lost causes (6): ?REA??
19d Amid conflict in grammar school, new threats (8): ?????LA?

Matakari, you're not on the right track yet - you have mistakes in 1, 6,16 and 19 D!
1aCafe surplus
Hoummos - anag mushroom - r
16a Tears (careers) = Tars around "e" (base)

Thanks jj109, NACW! Any hints for 6a, 19a, 19d?
19 Put together the usual three letter conflict, the usual 'new', a two letter word in the clue and the usual 'grammar school'. Yoo'll then have 'threats' - and the extra word too.
For 6 take country (UK) from 'd(uk)e' [after 'I'] then 3 letters for 'took'/a piece of cake?
Mataari, if you persevere with this, you will have a better understanding of the setter - and a better sense of satisfaction. The clues are definitely well within your grasp!
19a is an anag of S(lac)K +W +ARE.

Thanks, ProfessorMaisie and NACW! Just to ensure that
I'm now on the right track before I seek confirmation
for some of my Down clues.
6a IDEATE, 19a WREAKS, 19d WARNINGS
Thanks, Matakari - and yes to those(glad our hints worked!)

Good evening, now that I’ve gleaned a few tricks from today’s Spectator
by Doc, I return to Flowerman’s “Right is wrong” to see how far I’m right.
Confirmation would be appreciated for the following, thank you:

1d Draw up chart's second key (4) HALT
2d Tree with pliant branches on rocky rise (5) OSIER
3d City in Iran upset about 60 Minutes showing part of mosque (6)MIHRAB
4d Commission dismissing Britain's obligation (4)ONUS
8d A petition going around cheers Turkish ruler (6)ATABEG
13d Spectacle shortened with no grand song of triumph (5) PAEAN
27d Opponents of uprising are French (4) CONS
32d Country women visiting golf club (6) RWANDA
34d Wretched Hindu shunning Indian holy man (5)SADHU
40d Aquatic bird shot in sound (4) TERN
Matakari, all those are fine apart from 27 D. 'Of uprising' gives the first two letters of the answer, 'are French' gives the last two (which I thought you'd spot!). The definition is 'opponents'.

PS I think it'd take you mere minutes to parse your correct answers - trust yourself!
Thanks neveracrossword...I can see what 27a answer is now
In fact i could'nt see why it would be cons at all apart from meaning against- it didnt take account of the French bit of the clue
Thanks, Bobbinwales - I struggle more with a clue when an answer's already been given, I'm better with a blank sheet! Luckily that one was reasonably straightforward.
