Can anybody parse out 20a? I got the solution but I can't work out where the "black" comes in. Thanks

Ah. Thanks Toorak. "BENT" wasn't in my mental list of synonyms today.

Actually I'm a bit puzzled by 13a too. I got the answer through crossers, intuition and a lot of GK, but I can't parse the "French art" bit for toffee.

Es is the French equivalent of archaic art (e.g. thou art/ you are)

Thanks again Toorak. If you're still around, I've finished the puzzle, but I'm wondering about 12a. I don't quite get the "soldiers" bit. There are so many "soldiers" in crossword-speak. Which one is this?

Indict (lay a charge) around a & or (other ranks/soldiers)

12 a) To lay a charge, soldiers receive a sign (9)

Question Author

Dagnabbit! I knew that one! Other Ranks. OK. Thanks for the reminder
