External Monitor Connect To Laptop

I have never had a problem connecting an external monitor to a laptop. Until this month. There is a Lenovo Thinkpad in my new office. I have tried connecting it to five different spare monitors using a VGA to HDMI connector. I checked the driver is up to date, restarted the laptop, checked connections are tight etc & restarted, all to no effect. Can anyone think of anything else to try? Is there a way to turn an HDMI port on/off in settings maybe? I couldn't find any. I brought a couple of the spare monitors home and they work fine and my old laptops at home. I cannot work out what could be wrong. Please help!!
