No, they don't accept with alterations or overwrites

Well I have the opposite opinion, condriac. Unless stated otherwsise in rules and regulations altered entries are accepted. Others will agree with that here in time, I hope. Save it to say that I have won with a tippexed entry so know it does happen. But as for readability, then I think most would agree that an entry does have to be legible - that is one thing that is pretty sure to be included in the rules and regulations of the crossword you wish to enter.

I hope I'm not becoming a bore, but The Times has lots of crosswords which can be submitted online. If you realise you have made a mistake after submitting it, you can re-submit the whole crossword . Each entry is accepted on it's own merits, and I have checked this with the editor; I have also won a few this way. The added bonus is that you don't need stamps, and you get to read the paper 7 days a week.
I think the key word here is 'legible' as mentioned by flamingo97. I worked in Fleet Street for 30 years and I can safely say that editors were fair and tolerant when it came to crossword entries, not forgetting that there was no web then and the chances of mistakes were more common! It was a time to have shares in Tipp-ex, razor blades and ink erasers! Those were the days!!
I use the unused half of a six pack - of stamps. There is a lovely sheet of stickyback paper which you can cut into individual squares or of course if you make a complete horlicks of an answer just cut out the right length and width, stick it over the mistakes, and voila!
