latest poll from yougov suggests that Reform are almost equal with the conservatives. if people did actually vote this way then this would mean total electoral wipeout and the party would be overtaken by the lib dems as official opposition.
if more polls indicate this kind of fate then how desperate might the tories get? could they go so far as getting rid of sunak?

I dont... think this has ever happened during a general election. Much more the monarch asked someone to form 'a ministry' and they did or didnt ( or said no)
Voting Patterns in the C18 J H Plumb is your text for the 1700s but they didnt really have parties then.
"do you really think the conservatives are going to just ignore polling like this? the situation is getting very desperate indeed for them."
There's not much they can do about it really. Anyone with any sense will have already decided who (if anybody) they will vote for and will not be influenced by politicians falling off surfboards, touring round biscuit factories in a hard hat, getting in the way of the workers, or arguing the toss on ridiculous "head to head" debates.
Most people will have judged them by what they have done, not what they say they will do. Anyone basing heir vote on what politicians have promised them during the run up to an election needs their bumps felt.
Sam Freedman is quite an experienced political commentator and would not rule it out... the point is that the conservatives are desperate and their prospects really can't get much worse. at this point they are not fighting to win the election they are fighting for the position of His Majesty's Opposition. can you imagine if they lost that? it's something they'll do anything to avoid.
