Re Dirty mark(s), it's singular on the question sheet, so I can't say. If there's another place name that answers the singular clue, it would be great to hear it.

7  could be Redditch - if you think 'ditch' could be some sort of shelter.  Maybe during an attack in wartime!

7 could be Reddish Vale near Stockport if a vale could be considered a shelter.

The current status is :

1. Alphabet consumer  : Not yet solved

2. Dirty mark  :  Steyning is the most probable ("Staining")

3. Necessary for a boat   :  Not yet solved ("Hull" is the answer to another clue in the quiz). There are two places in the UK named "Water", but who's heard of them (unless, of course you live there!)

4. Not an illusion  : I'm going with "Rhyl"; it's the nearest phonetically.

5. Others follow : I'm going with "Leeds" (leads)

6. Sent for a quiet life : I'm going with "Coventry", as in "send to  . . . "

7. Scarlet shelter  : Not yet solved, but "Redruth" (red roof) is probably the one.

8. 180 degrees defence : South Shields is good.
