Just watching one now "Yorrup" (europe) - "Clozer" (closer).

Are there no English people that speak English properly any more?

Well, they let Naga Munchetty present Breakfast TV and she talks from the back her throat and down her nose. Can barely understand her some times.

But I wonder the same thing sometimes. I think (only a guess) that they see it as some form of equality. Can't exclude anyone just because they have a speech problem, that sort of thing, which is why they allow people with regional accents to present proigrammes as well.

Trobiscites the lot of 'em, end of.

president (prezident) comes out as pressidant

Resident (rezident) comes out as ressidant.

what happened to the famous Oxford English of the BBC?

Have a look at them.  It is the BBC.

Not just the Beeb, but other newsreaders also, when they say "thousands", they virtually shout it. Check it out next time!

they fit the required profile in other ways...

Interviewer just said - "the country voted overwhelmingly for a party (Labour)"...

No it didn't dearie - it voted rather underwhelmingly for Labour!

Do you want only English folk to read the news on the BBC?

Do English folk not have accents?

Cor blimey...they'll be using Cockerney rhyming slang next. How naff would that be?

11.09  so ttt the new newreader!!

Lol

If you can understand what they are saying, what's the issue?

15:14 because I expect a certain standard from those that broadcast to millions. They should be the example. I can comprehend what corporal Jones is saying but I wouldn't want him reading the news.

There's no 'T' in their alphabets either.

And all those "ing" words that Beth Rigby (amongst others) abbreviates.

....and don't get me started on "nucular" or "aks" 😖

TORATORATORA, would you like to see men presenting the  news in dinner-jackets?

You need to let this obsession go.  You've had a thread complaining about Catherine Byaruhanga's diction, another about the pronunciation of 'nuclear' on the news.

You shouldn't let little things get to you.  I like our regional accents and all I ask of newreaders is that I can understand them.

I have concern for falling standards.

The same could be said about written English.

It is more important that written English is precise because there is no inflection or facial expressions to convey the message.  Lack of punctuation can distort the meaning, the use of non-standard words can confuse the reader.
