Did you get anywhere with the crossword after my suggestions on Monday? I ask because I finally got the time yesterday to have a proper go at it and it is now completed. Let me know if you - or others - want any further information on it. Cheers

No best answer has yet been selected by Quizmonster. Once a best answer has been selected, it will be shown here.
For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Hi, Andy. 'Isaac S' is clearly a Jewish name and so is 'Mischa E'...ie the latter is 'like' the former. When you put 'Mischa...e' around the 'flighty' (anagram) of 'Nell G' you get 'mischallenge'.
The other one, 'illbestead' is correct...'ill' = I'll followed by the word 'be' as in the clue+anagram (messed up) of 'a set' + 'd', the abbreviation for 'degree'.
Chambers does list 'bestead', stating it means (quote): "situated (usually with ill, hard etc)", so that fits the clue perfectly.
Hope these help explain. Cheers

I never send the clue-writing answer-grids in, personally, Andy, having gone into a lasting huff about them years ago!
I once submitted such a clue, which was virtually word-for-word identical to the one offered by a prolific earlier prize-winner. We'd used the same approach, the same anagram, the same literary reference and whatever. If I'd been judging, I'd have thought in the circumstances: "Let's give the dosh to somebody new for a change!" But that's not what happened...he got it again!

Actually, his clues are invariably superb, so my response was pure sour grapes, but what can you do with a grievance other than nurse it, eh? Good luck with your clue, though.
