I don't read Private eye so this may be wrong. An unpleasant aftereffect could be a HANGOVER. Gordon is G. Does Hanover have any special meaning in Private Eye?

Hanover was an electorate in Germany until 1814 when it became a kingdom.

Has anybody else noticed that the clue whose answer is "did a runner" is not a proper anagram of DURAN DURAN IE, minus the twoUs, which is what is indicated by the wordplay??

Yes, I noticed that too. Would have been more appropriate if the clue had been worded "without the ultimate, ultimate number 1"

Hi puzzlesRus - Sorry but your answer 'Got a feel' is incorrect (24a 'Grope out of place around Kylie's butt'). Correct answer is 'Cop a feel' - 'cop' meaning 'get', as in 'you'll cop it', which also must be singular. Anagram of 'of place' + 'e' for Kylie's butt, or rear end, if you grasp what I mean. Thanks Jonalex - I believe you are right. Originally I had GET a feel (being the correct tense) but this clashed with hangOver, so i changed it to Got.
