And there is a direct correlation between a pint and a litre: there are 1.760 pints in a litre. The definition of a joule (newton metre) is as DSG said. The definition of a calorie is the amount of energy required to to raise one gram of pure water 1 degree celsius (from 14.5C to 15.5C exactly). As there are 4.184 calories in a joule Gef's answer is not completely correct, but fairly near. Sorry to be picky.
