For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.This doesn't really answer your question accurately, but - according to Collier's Encyclopedia - the Hebrides, off the west coast, comprise some 500 islands and the Orkney/Shetland Archipelago, off the north coast, comprises a further 150. You are looking at a total of well over 600, in other words. My guess would be that the majority are little more than rocky islets, so - to have a stab at least at answering you - I'd guess about 400-500 are uninhabited.
