Happy Easter - but no chocolate for the mutts please!

Can I ask all you nice ABers (who might not already know) not to feed your dogs any chocolate over Easter no matter how tempting it might be!! Chocolate is poisonous to dogs and should never be fed to them.

I know that this isn't actually a question but I thought I would rather post this rather than answer a question tomorrow night along the lines of "I've just fed my dog 20 tons of chocolate eggs and now he seems to be quite sick - anyone know what could be wrong?!!)

Forewarned is forearmed and all that!

here here im working all easter at an emergency clinic theres nothing worse than having to induce vomiting when its chocolate poisioning!!! though it does put me off chocolate for a bit

Actually Chocolate is poisonous to humans as well.

But we we can break down the poison (Theobromine) easily whereas dogs and other pets cannot.

ok, but how come a firend of mine, gives her dog choc and has done for years and he's fine and isn't ill. Can you shed some light?

There are only two possible answers. One - the dog is being fed special dog chocolate. Two- the dog is not being fed very much chocolate, so is not showing any ill effects. Chocolate is most definitely poisonous to dogs.

Some dogs can tolerate more than others - but would you want to take the risk that your dog was one of those that can't? Something the size of a Westie for instance could easily die if it ate either a box of chocolates or a large Easter Egg. If I have managed to frighten you into not giving your dog chocolate and you don't know what to do with it then please send it to me. I will happily dispose of it for you! (The chocolate, that is, not the dog!!!).
