2 Down smuggler's cross (4) ?u?e
Answer with explanation would be appreciated. My best guess is lute, as the head of a lute is called a cross, but it seems very weak to me. Any other ideas?

Also a homonym of loot, Christiana!
I've just started that crossword. I think it's lute too as in smugglers loot.
This was answered yesterday as MULE - which is a smuggler and also a mule is a crossbred animal.....

Thanks everyone. I'm going with mule. I'd got the homonym, it was the connection of lute with cross which worried me. Mule seems to fit both parts of the clue.
