- D - E, so it could be IDLE = useless, and it's an anagram of EL CID (hero) without C (caught)

Or does anyone have a better idea?

Is it maybe a play on words Hero (IDOL) can be caught (heard) as IDLE- useless?

I'm not bothering to send it in as I won �20 on last week's crossword! They send the (W H Smith) vouchers out by special delivery so they arrived on Friday and the postage cost was �4.55. (I think I'd rather have �24 of vouchers sent out 1st class, but I suppose they have to make sure they arrive safely.)
