John Dalrymple, son of the 1st Earl of Stair, was joint Secretary of State for Scotland to William of Orange and was one of the principal architects of this infamous event in Scottish history.
The Dalrymple coat-of-arms has nine lozenges (diamonds) in its saltire so thus, the connection.
