Down to my last three, and the old grey cells are getting run down. I've been at it all day, and solved most of them with help from my wife and son, but we're really tearing our hair out on 28, the accountant with spirit; 74, the American swimmer ( i've gathered it's a fish, and a type of dog, but maybe that's what's confusing us. The final one is 66, and I'm given to understand it might be Tim Healey. Would you consider that Gig is synonymous with Hey? Chambers is ambiguous.

Sometimes just asking the question solves it! I've just realised that I've been giving ana answer to 28 all afternoon, without realising how it fits!

So, I'd still like help with 66 & 74, please

28. You need to be musical to get the 'with spirit' bit (4)

74. The answer is not a TYPE of dog, just a name that may be applied to a dog with a particular characteristic.

66. is NOT Tim Healey. The second word is my favourite tipple (an' its nae Irn Bru).

THanks, Gen2. The tipple works in Google. I've got Chambers 1993 edition, and it doesn't give the answer, but my son has the latest version, which he'll check when he goes home. However, Google has come to the rescue with 66, but we're still floundering with the fish/dog swimmer. I'm a cat lover myself!

I'm surprised you didn't find 66 in your Chambers. I have a 1972 edition and it is in that - right between timpano and tin.

I struggled with 74. Chambers (1972) gives it as a North American river fish, the large-mouthed black-bass, so called because of the noise it makes. (cf the dog)
Chambers also says it is a four-wheeled horse-drawn cab.

Again, Very many thanks gen2. It's taken some time, and much googling, but I've eventually got the dog/fish/carriage and checked in chambers.

You are right about the other clue - I should have looked it up myself, not relied on some people with short sight who han't seen more than Tim was short for Timothy! Now I can write the answers in tidily, and have a shot of 66 before I go to bed!
