I hate my christian name, middle name and surname and have done all my life. I remember being in tears when my brother told me only my surname would change when I got married - I wanted it all to go!
You would also not believe the various spelling combinations I've had over the years - even when I'm standing right there and spelling my name out to them! Interestingly, I'm always drawn towards biblical/traditional names for any children I may have so I suppose it goes round in a cycle - weird/normal/weird/normal
I have an unusual name-when I was young I didn't like to meet new people because I would have to tell them - people say "whats it short for " or "thats strange" I chose Ellie and Kane for my kids.
I must admit I love having a different name now - you don't get mixed up with anyone - people only need to hear my first name!
I have a slightly unusual first name, and as a very shy child hated having to spell it out for adults. I longed to be one of those people who just said their name and the teacher would just write it down, no questions asked.
My housemate is not known by her first name, which is 'Helen'. Reason being, she's from Manchester, and in the first week of her life, her Mum got fed up with her being called 'our 'Elen''. Henceforth, she has always been known by her middle name of 'Miriam'.
Spudqueen - I have to answer your post about weird spellings. My daughter's name is Caitlin (spelt the traditional way - not Kaitlyn or Kaitlin) and we shorten it to Cait (spelt like a short version of her name) because it would look odd spelt the normal way. I never thought that made me one of those people who saddles their child with a dodgy name though! Her first name and both middle names are in the top 50 most popular so I'd guess they're all 'normal'.
