All I can come up with is MORUS which is a fruit. Rats belong to the genus MUS.
Hi Vimto, I don't have the answer I'm afraid, what do you have for Q44?
Thanks.
We used to call the young of a rat,a PINKY
I've put PEACH - Peaches Geldof, offspring of a (Boomtown) Rat.

Probably completely wrong, though.

Hello all, rogerr, I'm pretty sure that when I was disecting rats at school the genus was "rattus". Juliely, "Charlie is my darling" (no. 44), I'm working on "c" for charlie and loves or lover which gives "cloves" and "clover"; neither of which can really be described as a fruit or vegetable, What do you think?
Big Jenny, I think you have cracked it. Really, very good; I'd never have seen that connection as I have not heard of Geldof's daughter.

razza, What's the significence of "pinky"?
Hi Big Jenny,
Don't know how you thought of that. Well done.
Val.
According to Chambers dictionary the genus is mus, but I agree Peaches is a brilliant answer.
Question Author
Sorry rogerr, but I have just looked in my Chambers and it states: RAT- a genus ( Rattus) of animals close to mice----Chambers 2003, reprinted 2005.
Mine's an older edition and it says "rat , any of the larger animals of the genus Mus (distinguished from mouse) " etc.
I agree that the common rat is Rattus rattus, but i was looking for something else to give me some help with the solution.
Strangely, there is no mention of rattus in the definition, which is odd.
I had better get a newer edition.
I have just looked in my Collins dictionary and it doesn't mention rattus either, or Mus!
It says " a large rodent of the Muridae or mouse family".
Anyone want to buy two old dictionaries?
Cheers
Rogerr
