A strange one I know but you may be able to put me and my work mates out ofmisery. we have got into a debate on castle names.... are there any castles that are not names after the town/village they are built in? I.e heaver is in heaver, bodium in bodium etc......?

Pendennis Castle is in Falmouth
Buckingham Palace isn't even in Buckinghamshire, let alone in Buckingham.
Thats 'cos it was built by the Duke of Buckingham in 1703 jno.
oh, and before anyone says Leeds Castle is in Kent, it is by the village of Leeds.
just so sddsddean: people take their names from the towns where they are based, then give them to buildings they put up elsewhere. Not usually castles, though, I admit - their second building is more likely to be a palace.

Castle Howard
Castle Howard in York is named after the Howard family, but I'm not sure if it's really classed as a Castle or a stately home.

Can't have Castle Rushen as it is in the parish of Rushen where Castletown is situated.
The castle-keep in Newcastle. Newcastle was named after the 'new castle'. The new stone one was built where an older wooden one used to be.
Beaumaris Catle on Anglesey was given the French name of Beau Mareys (Beautiful Marsh).
Just have a look at Scotland. Glamis Castle near Brechin is one
