Rocky Mountains Should have been two words!

Anag- Am not in US
Question Author
Yes I thought it must be this - many thanks kayakamina for replying so quickly
I'm with you kaya, never seen it written as one word. Also the connection betwen WRONG and ROCKY was a bit tenuous, don't you think?
I agree Geo0939 There was some debate at the weekend about it , mainly centred on the 5,9 but also the indicator in the clue.
Cheers K
This is certainly a challenging clue - and I agree that it should have been two words. However, I read this type of clue as a "Hidden Anagram" as used in the Rainbow Quizzes - sort of a back formation. Using this type of clue the answer to ARTISTS? would be "Dire Straits"!

Here the solution "ROCKY Mountains" means ANAGRAM of "Mountains" which leads the solver to the CLUE "Am not in the US" (as a back formation).

The use of the word WRONG alludes to the fact that the Solution (Rocky Mountains) ARE INDEED in the US.

Am I making sense? Anyway that's how I read the clue - and it could be better than it first looks.
I think it's a flawed clue, however you look at it. If 'the' were deleted it would be okay (assuming you approve of indirect anagram clues - and the slightly tortured 'the answer is the wordplay' kind of clue).
Crofter. The clue probably is better than it first looks. My immediate take on Saturday when it was posted was that the words 'Am not in the US' were 'WRONG' ie anagram! and doubly so by being 'Rocky' in the answer. Your point about the Mountains being correctly in the US is well made. K
Yes, you explained it very well, crofter. I must admit I didn't consider the fact that the statement was wrong, merely that the letters of the statement were in the wrong position, (Anagram).

You do put another slant on it. However I still don't think it was a great clue.

'Rocky' is definitely the anag indicator - and the 'wrong' is part of the '&lit' nature of the clue.
