18 across seems to be 'ON HEAT' but I can't see why. Clearly it means ready to mate, but where does 'despite loss of queen' come in? I keep thinking of removing ER from some relevant phrase but that doesn't seem to help.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Proceed with vigour, despite loss of queen - ready for mate?(6, 2 words)

I have ON_EAT already so the missing letter must be H.
HEA(R)T = vigour
Oh, and ON means "Proceed!"

> HEA(R)T = vigour
Aha! That's what I was missing. Thanks very much.
