Thanks jan1956 - yes I am aware that it is null and void as there were no shaded answers today.
I have Corb
sorry jimjools but definately corF
corf
One entry found for corf.

Main Entry: corf
Pronunciation: 'korf
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural corves /'korvz/
Etymology: Middle English, basket, from Middle Dutch corf or Middle Low German korf, from Latin corbis basket
British : a basket, tub, or truck used in a mine
Hi Jan this is what I found when looking -

Corb \Corb\ (k[^o]rb), n. [L. corbis basket. Cf. Corbeil,
Corp.]
1. A basket used in coal mines, etc. see Corf.

2. (Arch.) An ornament in a building; a corbel.

It also refers to corf though. I'm confused now. :-)
Hi, jimjools luckily it realy does not matter corf/corb we are not sending it in so it's only for fun today isn't it?
I know that the Herculis is 'null and void' BUT, for me. it remains a challenge to complete this xword.

So, I find this discussion interesting -

I googled and the first response entries cam up with references to CORF - then I confirmed this google result to several dictionaries --> http://www.onelook.com/?w=corf&ls=a

I did not look further, but after Jim Jools came up with CORB, I have found this also -----
Similar references in The Online Plain Text Dictionary and The Webster 1913 Dictionary which actually refer to BOTH Corb and Corf in the same line! http://www.mso.anu.edu.au/~ralph/OPTED/
http://humanities.uchicago.edu/orgs/ARTFL/form s_unrest/webster.form.html

In Both these dictionaries -
Corb .... a basket used in coalmines
Corf .... a large basket used in carrying or hoisting coal or ore

So, I think that CORF is the better answer?
