Oh please,gonna cut the frames on the old cartoon cos smoking cats are a bad influence,These cartoons are over 50 years old,made when smoking wasnt such a big problem,by all means change future progs but some of these cartoons are classics.,leave 'em be!By altering these,they are paving the way for more cr4p,no more rocky,it glorifies violence,so no more fighting films,,what total and utter $h1t!

As I understand it , it was a complaint by ONE person that lead to this Decision. It is sensible to avoid smoking references in Kids cartoons but we are applying our own standards to old cartoons. What about Popeye with his pipe?

Considering that T and J spend the rest of the time lamping each other with Frying Pans, Rolling Pins and Ironing Boards , you have to wonder when they will be banned altogether!

On that basis, it's fine to show sitcoms like "Love thy Neighbour" or "Mind your Language" as PC wasn't such an issue when they where made.

We cannot underestimate the evil influence of Tom and Jerry. I blame them entirely for the fact that I still have a face shaped like the base of an iron and an inordinate fear of headless, overweight black housemaids.

they aren't shown as historical documents (unlike, say, pictures of Churchill and his cigars), they're screened, for kids, as if they were made yesterday. I can't see why kids should have Marlboro attitudes handed out to them in the name of entertainment.

Not that I pnader to the PC brigade but.... in Tom and Jerry, Jerry hardly ever comes to harm as Tom often falls victim to his own schemes to catch Jerry, there is therefore a powerfull message that we must learn to deal with the consequences of our actions and the violent action hardly ever resolves a situation successfully in the long term.

You never actually see peoples faces in T&J so any smoking is simply a smoking cigarette on a tab etc. Seems pointless to me.

Tom's been smoking for nearly 70 years. Can you imagine how many patches it'll take to coax him off the habit?!

If I'm not incorrect Tom and Jerry also get regularly lashed so we can presumeably blame them for all the binge drinking that goes on, not to mention the "happy slapping" campaigns. And there I was thinking it was all to do with poverty, unemployment, lack of key parenting skills and the under-funding of inner city areas, when all the time it was a wee cartoon cat and mouse.I hope they lock them up and throw away the key for eroding our society's values so.

Although only one person complained, the fact that the cartoons were made 50 years ago is irrelevent. If adult porn was banned now, is it ok then to look at it in 50 years time because it is 50 years old?

When you are watching Tom and Jerry is there a little pop up in the corner saying ''this cartoon is 50 years old it's ok to to disregard the smoking cat'.

I 've always thought it strange that tv programmes have previously allowed it when any other forms of smoking have been frowned upon. 50 years. makes no difference.
