Two cars - same number plate

Whilst walking around a holiday town I saw two totally different cars (different make and model) with EXACTLY the same registration. They were both parked in the same street with one other car in between them. Me and my friends looked carefully several times at the two cars and agreed that the reg number on both cars was indeed the same.
Surely this is not allowed?

I took photos of the cars but I don't know whether I should report this or not, and who to. Surely other people living in the road must have seen this, I thought. Anyway, the photos are very clear; I' m certainly not making this up or anything - I haven't got time to waste on stuff like this, but should I report this to anyone in particluar?

DVLA might be your best bet. Did you check the plates at both ends as well as discreetly looking at the tax discs?
were the cars for a particular business?? (taxi firm or something) i think there might be something that says companies like that can have a fleet with same reg? dont quote me im maybe wrong but theres a taxi firm in our town and im 90% positiv the cars have the same reg.
I cannot believe 2 cars have the same reg never mind a fleet
Were you drunk and fell onto a garage forecourt lol
2 cars are not allowed to have the same reg,its against the law, people do it in london to avoid paying the conjestion charge

Thank you for all that.
No, I cetainly was not drunk; in fact I don't even drink or smoke for that matter.

Perhaps I should thry the DVLA and see what they say.

I hadn't thought of looking at the tax discs. That's a good idea. Perhpas I should just drive round there and have a look since it's not far.

They weren't taxis - one was a mini and I don't know what the other one was (certainly no mini), but I have really clear photos of them if anyone's interested!
Report them to the police - there is certainly something dodgy going on. It can be anything from car tax fraud through to trying to get off speeding tickets.
I have also seen this. The two cars were parked on a private driveway so, technically, the owner(s) were not committing any offence unless the car with the false number plates (possibly both of them) was driven. I reported it to the local nick who said they were taking an interest. A few weeks later when I passed the same area, the cars were gone, and the house was empty.

There is no doubt that two cars cannot have the same registration mark. I would start off with the local nick as, in my experience, the DVLA are not particularly good at enforcement unless there is money to be made.

One of the cars has a digit 1 and the other a capital letter I.
Does a capital letter I actually exist or is it meant to be read as a digit 1?
for vehicle registrations there is no i,o,u,z. Q plates are used only for vehicles that are imported or for eg. kit cars
Its not a capital I its a number 1 which on number plates look like I.

Let us know how you get on.
