Despite earlier assertions that 'pan fat' is the answer to 12a, the correct answer is surely 'ham fat'. I can't find any references to 'pan' meaning an inferior performer, whereas 'ham' means just that.

For what it's worth, I agree - according to Chambers, ham as a bad actor is probably a truncation of hamfatter.
As the proponent of 'Pan Fat' I must agree that 'Ham Fat' is certainly a better answer and one I should have got.
