Could the word bed not be used as a verb meaning to lay beneath the soil and plot be the post as on a chart ?

Thank you both. I think POST = stake, LAY = wager is probably the link, but BED = lay is an intriguing possibility.

As I don't subscribe to the Azed slip I'd be interested to know in due course if there is any further comment on this one.
