Looking for the name of an island - clues are: name derives from it being covered in pines; known for salt pans and stategic position; was target for invaders so has look out towers round the coast; supplies salt for Scotland's roads in winter. Pictures suggest somewhere Spanish/South American to me. Any ideas please?

From information I would guess at Ibiza, known as the Pine Islands which also has Salt Pans. There are lookout towers on the island. Don't know if it supplies Scotland with salt though !

Thanks, Tringer. I'm sure Ibiza's right.
Ibiza? Maybe, but Corsica and Sicily fit most of the clues as well - round coastal towers, salt pans, pines, sunsets...
