Did a pub quiz last night and the above question was asked. We answered 'Newton Heath' as did most people. This was judged incorrect, as NH had a previous name. I had never heard this, can anyone else enlighten me on the early days of ManU.

Founded in 1878, United was originally called "Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Newton Heath", but known irreverently then as "The Heathens", it became a professional football team in 1885 and adopted its present name in 1902
The official MU site says that the club was formed in 1878 under the name "Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway".

I've never heard of another name, and you would have thought the official site would mention it!
I was at a quiz once where a question was 'who used to be known as Garibaldi Reds?'.
The answer was given as Man U. Not sure if this is correct though.
Sorry, scrap that. That was actually Forest! My bad!
and Nottingham Forest still are known as the Garabaldi Reds to their supporters.....
