A fast ferry leaves Port B at 1445 and arrives at Port A three hours later
A Motor Boat leaves Port A at 1500 and travels at 12 Knots
How many nautical miles from Port A are they when they pass

I am tentatively suggesting that the two craft will pass at a point 22 nautical miles from Port A.
I agree with sarumite.

The ferry is doing 72/3 = 24 knots. At 1500 it has been at sea for � hour, so has travelled 6NM. Remaining distance to Port A is then 66NM.
Motor boat doing 12 kn. covers half the distance covered by the ferry in the same time, so it is 22NM from A when they cross.

It is to be hoped that they are both keeping a good lookout.

Thank you both for your answers, 22 miles was the correct answer. I didn't hear any maroons to call the lifeboat out, so I presume they both passed each other safely
