A possible alternative to K's suggestion is the Muse CALLIOPE (lady) . It's also the name of a keyboard musical instrument (hence crotchets) driven by steam (requiring devices known as eccentrics?)

It will depend on how cryptic they want to go!

I've had a quick look at this:
'Some of his characters seem to have found him elusive (10)'. If this refers to Six Characters in Search of an Author the answer is Pirandello. in which case your letters are now C - - - I - D - .
