Independent-Could anyone please confirm that 1&2 down is mark of convenience,and if so what is the first word of 18 across please?

Am stuck on 18 down and 8 down in the Times
18down-Like some physics enthusiast,slightly deficient beyond reason(7) N- C -T - R. 8down-Sailors?see'em beginning to croon shanty when drunk(9).- - C -T - M - -.

Morning crofter. I had helped others with the Times on Saturday so was familiar with the puzzle.
No special K just boring yoghurt and banana today!

Thanks very much kayakamina,my brain seemed to be stuck in neutral,also thanks crofter for the break down of yachtsmen,just didn't see it.By the way K,if that's what you do on a breakfast of yoghurt and a banana,what would you do if you did have "Special K" as crofter suggests LOL!
