18d could be either Lanyard or Halyard, neither of which exactly fits the clue, any other ideas?

I'm putting lanyard as that seems the nearer of the two when I've checked a few dictionaries.
Try painter perhaps
I think it is lanyard
Think it's lanyard. Halyard is really for hoisting a sail.
Chambers gives lanyard as "a short rope used as a fastening or handle (naut.), which I think fits the clue.

Thanks everybody. I tried painter first of all but it doesn't fit with 32a Cartwright.
