Visual Metaphors

Heya! Hope this is in the right section.

Does anyone know the effect of visual metaphors in plays. I can only think that it makes the language more emotional and creates a bigger impact on the audience but apparently thats not enough... lol.

Does the term perhaps mean actual visual props or scenery? Like a character walking through a doorway or gate to show an emotional transition?

Or is the question really about language and wording?

If you are answering a test question, perhaps giving an example to illustrate your answer would help.

Hum, I don't think its to do with visual props although thats an interesting idea. Its just a small bit of an essay you see, so its not like a whole question on visual metaphors, I wouldn't put it past them though!

A visual metaphor in a play is a kind of visual effect. For example, if someone was feeling alone, they would be in a spotlight on a darkened stage and any other actors on stage would be some distance away. If the person felt isolated within a group of people, the lighting would be the same as above, but the other actors would be close to the edge of the spotlight and interacting with each other but not the person in the spotlight.
