In yesterdays crossword the clue "Lover needed heart to get polished result " was given the answer "buffed ".

Could somebody please tell me the significance of the first part of this clue? It's probably staring me in the face but I just can't see it.

Lover = Buff, eg film buff + neEDed (heart). ☺ja

buffed = buff + ed ... buff = lover (as in theatre buff)
and Ed lies at the heart of neEDed
