Don't know if this is helpful but there was a Whalley Abbey. It was Cistercian. Check it out on Google. Certainly has a large sea mammal in title. The 2 letters over L & Y could mean Leap Year.
jennifer - Whaley Abbey can also be spelt with one "L".
Hence = Whale + Y(ear)
