Pilgrim?
Chaucer's Canterbury Tales were told by pilgrims on the way to Canterbury.
At that time ( 14th Century) a pilgrim who had been to the Holy Land wore a palm leaf , and was known as a palmer.
Or it may have been John Barbour Archdeacon of Aberdeen.
