Kev, there exists only a handful of words which fit the letter-pattern given, none of which - as far as I can see - has anything to do with mortar attacks. This identical clue appeared here a few days ago and the answer then was definitely 'barrage'. The suspicion has to be, therefore, that Reddoor has given us the wrong letters or the wrong clue!
