If it's any help to anyone else, 729 is 27 squared ( 27 x 27) or 3 to the power 6. Likewise 516 is 2 to the power 9.

Of course - it was obvious to me, but I was thinking of it in terms of numbers rathers than letters.
To go back to 516 - it is 8 x 8 x 8 - or 8 cubed .
