i tracked it down ... it's mal vu. but i really am fed up with english crosswords that try to show how smart the compiler is by including obscure foreign words and phrases that are not in common use here.

Hi sincnoel, I have just returned from lunchtime drinks at club (can still see screen!), I agree this clue was a bit off, it was also the last one that I found earlier. Can accept Latin phrases, but when compiler starts to get involved with other languages such as French and also Italian for 17d Appalto, it is a bit tiresome! ☺☺
