I dont think ACOUSTICS fits --I now have another letter which fits ACCEPTING viz. - C - E - T - - -.
There is a clue down which will give the second last letter - here it is.

It means : to speak, pronounce or utter in a certain way.

I think the logic is: last = en(d) + ounce = light

but it's a bit iffy !

If you have1a ..Perhaps some Irish spring, quadrupled (4 5),or 31a One can't take it to sound as read to have it in a noble way (4 5) ?l?? ?????, it would be much appreciated.

Slaney, the ans. to 1a was FOUR TIMES (don't really understand why - whats the connection between "some irish spring " and "times"?) and the ans. to 31d was BLUE BLOOD.

By the way ACCEPTING was correct (well done Phil7) and so was ENOUNCE (well done Kettledrum)
