Of those, some 2,000 are inhabited. (Re the website, a 'skerry' is a rocky island.)
Oh dear, that was a poor answer on my part! But only wrong by a few thousand! I did actually get it off a site about Norwegian islands, having returned to it I find it says "four main islands" - I assume by way of population and perhaps industry etc. Am sure it never said that yesterday!! Sorry Mark!

hi just thought i'd chip in.
according to Volume 379 16 March, 1988 Maritime Jurisdiction (Amendment) Bill, 1987: Second Stage (Resumed). it is broadly accepted that a rock becomes an island when it is capable of supporting life, before that it is simply a rock. i am unsure whether this clasification excludes nesting bird colonies who inhabit island and rock formations on a permanent basis. i take it to mean those offshore habitats with native flaura and fauna. also, nobody has counted up the islands of norway so i don't believe your totals, tourist boards are notorious for over estimating the abudancy of natural features to make cheep headlines.
