35d: a mark added to a letter to indicate special pronunciation.

I seem to be the only one who doesn't know these, thus indicating my total ignorance.

Thank you yet again, JimJools. Me wife spelled 13d with a final 'r' - which Chambers gives (although it has 'tusser', which doesn't fit with 20a: Bertha). It's the first time we've finished it on a Saturday!
