Title of crossword is "Ins and Outs".
I've solved the grid bar the links, for which I have searched high and low. The preamble states : the unclued lights, including one nickname. are of an overall kind, the across ones differing from the down ones.
Does in and out have a sporting connotation, as in rowing ?
I have across as _AYLO_ (? Taylor) , _ALBO_ (? Talbot), _USE_ and _UM_S
Downs are K_EB_R (?Kleber), PERD_TA (?nickname Perdita), C_W_ _R (?Cowper) and COR_ (?Cork)

Can anyone give me a clue as to where I should look further ?

Thanks gen2. I did consider cricketers as well, but cannot find any that fit all of the answers, especially the nickname Perdita. and that the across differ from the downs -- ? from different countries. I'm afraid that I'm not a sporty person .
Just a thought ...Kleber (French General)
William Cowper
Mary Robinson( nickname Perdita)
and the Earl of Cork
all died in1800
Just what I was thinking of Slaney:
Sir Henry Taylor & William Fox Talbot were born in 1800.
Your last across would be Dumas, then....
& Pusey
and Cort ???
Quite right pj ... didn't open up document properly ...Earl of Cork died 1809 , so Cort is correct.

Thank you all so very very much.

I had looked at Jean-Baptiste Kleber ; had seen the nickname Perdita for the actress Mary Robinson ; had guessed the other names (except Cort ) but not the relevance of 1800.

Again, many thanks.
