Central Asia

I'm hoping to travel around central asia (as a single female). Has anyone ever been before? Obviously caution is advised in a relatively unstable area but is it better to stick with a guided tour? or is it possible do your own thing? And how much red tape is there (lots of internet sites state this)? sorry there's a whole load of questions there but any hints and tips would be appreciated!
