I suspect this has been debated already but is it Monet or Manet? Cambridge Biographical Dictionary leads you to believe that Manet is the founder of the Impressionist movement but I would have thought Monet was the 'unswerving advocate'. Any thoughts? BB

I feel fairly certain that the answer in this case is (Claude) Monet.

I assume the a/o is not a checked letter and can't be worked out from another clue?

There are two possibilities - either both answers will be accepted as correct, or the compiler has introduced an element of chance into the answer to reduce the number of correct entries.

monet for sure. my collins describes him as "the leading exponent of impressionism". which seems to cover the clue.

I'm not so sure.

The Houghton Mifflin Dictionary of Cultural Literacy says Manet was "A nineteenth-century French painter, one of the originators of Impressionism".

The Hutchinson Encyclopedia says Manet was a "leading Impressionist"

While Monet may be the front runner, I don't think we can exclude Manet. Therefore at the end of the day, only Kate knows the correct answer!
