Yes, Swannbaker, I agree it ought to be spear but if it is then sudatory is wrong which seems unlikely. The s and the d fit with other words but it also provides the first r in the clue about the eccentric attire. Without that first r it would be much easier to find a word to fit the letters a - c - - - r -. I think I may have to give up on this one. Thanks anyway.
