GK I take it you have some of these letters already in place?
If not I would think that Hell would fit the definition.

Hi kk, yes I have SO?R and am pretty sure S & O are right, with 50% R (thermal - exceppt Royal Marines don't like being called soldiers...!)
Soldiers are sometimes abbreviated to OR (other ranks) in crosswords. Does that help?
Question Author
Thanks kk, but not really - the clue that gives the R is Soldiers, nearly all warm (7) I had T?????L and could only find thermal in Chambers wordgames which meant anything to do with "warm"
If the clue was 'thus place is diagreeable' then it could be sour (so = thus ur = place)

sour = disagreeable - I think this is a better answer than soar.
Question Author
Thanks netkey and kk - I have decided to go for soar, as it is a river in UK and I can't find anywhere called sour on google. Think the exclam mark in clue would suggest that it might sound disagreeable (!) I'm only pleased to have actually finished skel without ripping up Express in frustration as oft is my wont! Doubtless I'm up the wrong tree....
20d Sour . . . . so=this ('like so') + Ur=place (ancient city)

23a Thermal . . . . the RM + al (nearly all)
